Proud to be associated with Fotospeed as an sponsored speaker.

I have  three FACE TO FACE talks for camera clubs - happy to take bookings for these in anticipation of a resumption in physical meetings being possible with the option to substitute a ZOOM presentation (details below) should the circumstances demand.

The first, called "Shooting People" charts my journey into creative portraits, discussing how to get started, the value of collaboration with others, thoughts composition and style, the importance of shooting for yourself, all illustrated with prints on Fotospeed papers and inks prints.   In the second half, I show how I make some of the creative images, including 'before and after' shots, in an attempt to demystify and inspire listeners to have a go themselves.

The second, "from camera to print'" is positioned as a follow-on looking at the creative process in a bit more detail, specifically, selecting images from a shoot and determining how to process. This also includes hands on examples of beauty retouching techniques such as dodge & burn, healing brush and frequency separation. The second half provides an update on recent works since the first presentation.

The third "Nobody" is a new talk in development for 2020 onwards. In this I shall showcase prints and PDIs on a variety of other genre other than portraits – there may be some anonymous people in street / candid shots, hence the dual significance of the title.

All three lectures are customisable.

During the break I have a number of my images printed on a range of Fotospeed papers so people can see the importance of paper choice when presenting prints. I also have discount cards / codes for anyone wishing to purchase Fotospeed papers/inks.

During this difficult time, whilst face to face talks are postponed, I am offering talks via Zoom, (or other platforms) - NO CHARGE - I do welcome a voluntary donation to the Photographers With Disabilities charity that I support, it you are able.

I have a mixed subject talk "It's not what you see, it's what you make"  showcasing some of my non-portrait photography, step by step walk through making of some of my creative images using a live Photoshop demo, or sharing some of my creative projects during lockdown (as featured in the PAGB eNews for May 2020.)

“Stairway to Heaven” this is a brand new talk with over a 100 images charting my love for photographing stairs, steps, escalators etc. Drawing both from new works and my library of images, no talk would be complete without a few people and a bit of creativity.

Due to popular demand I am now offering my print talk, "Shooting People" as a Zoom lecture for any clubs outside the South West / South Wales.

Any club interested, just get in touch and I'll try to tailor something to your needs.

Here's just a few of the many comments received:

Peter, Gravesend CC (via Zoom)
Many thanks on behalf of our club for the brilliant talk which you gave to us on 29nd November. You certainly know how to squeeze every ounce of potential from your ‘negatives’ and I’m sure our members learned many things on the night. It’s clear that you apply yourself to all genre with equal aplomb and the results are always top drawer. We will be eagerly awaiting what you have to offer with your ‘Stairway to Heaven’ when you return to us in February.

Peter, Royal Wootton Bassett CC (via zoom)
Just a short note to express our gratitude for your excellent and inspiring presentation last night which was both very enjoyable and highly informative.
Your passion and love of photography came across very strongly and your masterful processing of images to take them to a new level of impact and meaningfulness should be an inspiration to us all and hopefully will motivate our members to develop their skill sets accordingly and explore the unknown.
I appreciate the time you devoted to us last night and my only misgiving is that a number of members were not able to join the meeting and are unaware of the value of what they missed.

Trish, Stroud CC (in person - Shooting People - Print Talk)
Just a very quick “thank you” for the super presentation last night. As I said in my closing, you certainly made us all think about improving our photography, and in particular from where I was sitting there were some very audible “oohs” and “how did he do that” when you were showing your before and after images too. So thank you very much for showing that, as I do sometimes find that some members don’t even realise it is possible to do such things and do at times leave the image “straight out of camera” as they don’t feel that they should mess around with it. It is therefore great to have someone like yourself to show them what can really enhance an image. Your images of Paul were stunning, and I loved the ones you did for the Lyndsay Adler challenge with the paint – I’m not surprised you did well, those ones definitely have the ethos of a Lyndsay Adler shoot.

Teresa, Blackburn CC (via zoom)
There have been a lot of messages on our club WhatsApp group all saying what an excellent evening it was and how much they enjoyed and learnt from the evening, so thank you again.

Keith, Highcliffe & Infinity
Just wanted to say a big thank you for such an excellent presentation last night. Feedback has been universally positive. Personally I felt inspired by the images you showed and particularly some of the work behind them. I can be very ruthless when I review a shoot, trashing many images that might actually have potential with a bit of work. I’ll think twice in future. Your talk has been a great start to our season.

Ian, Earl Shilton CC (via zoom)

Many thanks for last night’s talk. It was extremely interesting and I believe will prove to be quite inspirational to those of our members who are keen to extend their artistic abilities. The images were stunning and your way of creating them made it seem easy, though I’m sure it is far from that!

Rebecca, Swindon CC (via zoom)

Thank you so much for presenting to us last night. I can’t pretend I understood everything you demonstrated but I could follow and appreciate the level of perfection you demanded of your images. We have members in the club that, like you, have a library of walls, skies, rooms, you name it, which appear in their images but your work takes that to new levels. I was stunned with the imagination and beauty of some of your images. You definitely gave our members something to aspire to achieving. I must also thank you for doing this for no charge. It is one thing to share you work ethic with us but it is another to do this for no recompense. We really appreciated it. Once things return to a level of normality I am sure we will be asking you back to Swindon to present to us in person. On behalf of everyone last night, thank you for sharing your many talents with us.

Paul, Port Talbot (via Zoom)

Thank you very much yet again for an excellent talk last night. We have had a number of members comment on how good it was and the word inspirational has been used on more than one occasion.

Penny, Dorchester (via Zoom)

Thanks again for last night, feedback has all been excellent and we look forward to seeing the prints. I would like to keep it for 2021 with the hope that we will be back to a semblance of normality by then...

Val, Dorchester (via Zoom)

I was so disappointed to have to initially cancel your planned talk to the club due to the lockdown but absolutely delighted you agreed to give a Zoom presentation, albeit on a different subject and what a presentation it was. Really superb images, especially your monochrome ones and you certainly showed us how you can still take terrific photos in limited circumstances, definitely inspiring. I know your presentation was hugely enjoyed and I just wanted to say thank you so much on behalf of the club. We will look forward to seeing your original talk and prints hopefully in the not too distant future.

Peter Weaver – Hanham PS

…a big thank you for coming along last Wednesday to show your excellent, creative and hugely imaginative images. One of our most skilled members who also does a lot of creative images said that your talk was the best one he had seen at the club for several months. Your photography demonstrates how important it is to use imagination and creativity when you take photographs and also to progress with this afterwards.

Gloucester CC

– programme entry “Mike shares his collection of general photos and his speciality, portraiture. His first visit to GCC but comment after a visit to Stroud “Very good and very entertaining!!......they’ll love him!!” A good evening in prospect.”

Annie Blick – Stroud CC

I did so enjoy your talk last night, so refreshingly different. Your images were inspirational and thought provoking. It was much appreciated by members and I know gave them a lot to think about in their approach to a different style of image making.
